Visit to SPCA - A enjoyable,barking experience!

Event: Spring Cleaning @ SPCA
Date: 21st and 28th of February 2009
Time: 9.00am
Venue: SPCA @ Ampang Jaya

Recently, the members of Project H.O.M.E spent our Saturdays volunteering at SPCA. With 28 members, we had two sessions, on the 21st and 28th Feb.

The objective of this activity is to provide SPCA a helping hand with the animals thus accomplishing Project H.O.M.E. 's objective, providing voluntary service to SPCA to lighten their load.

As we arrived at the compound, we were brought in to the animal enclosure where the dogs are kept. We were told to start off with changing the newspapers in the kennels. Dirty and soiled newspapers were changed with new sheets. This task was proven difficult at times when we had to control the dogs from running out from their kennels. Quite often, we had to chase a dog who ran out and place the doggy back.

Some were very active and eager so one had to entertain the dog while the other changes the newspapers. Simply, pet them and give 'em some love! That will do. We also refilled their water bowls. We were more than willing to play and cuddle with the dogs and puppies. Keeping in mind that we should treat them carefully as some of the dogs showed signs of being mistreated, being rather hesitant in approaching us.

At 10.40 a.m., it was feeding hour. The staff cooked rice and chicken. Some volunteers helped to prepare the food, plucking the chicken necks. The food was later divided into every food bowl and mixed with kibble. We went around the enclosure giving each dog a bowl. It was a feeding frenzy!

There was this dog Wira who kept eating the food out of Waja's bowl, the other dog who shared his cage. Quite the fierce one too! The puppies were fed with softer food from different bowls compared to adult dogs. We may have outdone ourselves when it came to the puppies especially two brown ones and two cute black ones. The girls had a blast playing and cooing over the little ones.

As it was a Saturday morning, there were many from the public who visited SPCA either as volunteers or to visit the animals. There were a few potential pet adopters too. The morning was busy with the noise of people and barking dogs. As we completed our second task, we were told that our two hour session was over.

Though for most it was their first time working with animals, at the end of the day, everyone had fond memories and certainly a big room in our hearts for the dogs in SPCA. We wish to thank Ms. Jacinta Johnson of SPCA for this amazing opportunity! Everyone should try helping out at the centre as a fun and benificial way of spending your weekends.
